Confessions of a Cheat is a Clever, Witty Film
Confessions of a Cheat, or The Story of a Cheat is a very old film, made in 1936. It was based on the novel of the same name, written by Sacha Guitry, who also wrote the script for the film, directed the film and starred in it too. Sacha Guitry was one of Paris’s most popular and prolific playwrights in the 1920s.
The Memoirs Are Written In a Cafe
The Cheat is middle aged, and writing his memoirs in a cafe. At the age of twelve he was caught stealing from the family’s store. He was punished by not being allowed to partake of the family’s treat of a mushroom dinner. The mushrooms turn out to be poisonous, and his parents, siblings, uncle and his grandparents all die. His mother’s unscrupulous cousin looks after him, and uses all his inheritance for his own benefit. It does seem to the boy, from all his experiences that dishonesty pays.
The boy runs away from the cousin and takes various assorted jobs. While operating an elevator in a hotel in Monaco he meets a Countess, who is much older than he is. They have a brief affair. He joins the army for a while, and after than becomes a croupier in a casino in Monaco. At the start of the First World War he is taken back into the French Army. He is wounded almost immediately but rescued by Charbonnier, a fellow soldier. He spends the rest of the war reading books. After the war, he meets a beautiful woman in a restaurant. After spending the night together, she tells him she is a professional thief. He helps her in a robbery of a ring from a jeweller, but returns to his job as a croupier.
In Confessions of a Cheat, he meets a woman in a casino, who believes she can control where the ball falls on the roulette wheel. She does win for a while, and he marries her. Later she loses all her money, and they obtain a divorce. He then becomes a professional card cheat. One day, while in disguise, he spots his former wife and the jewel thief at gambling table together. He wins a good amount, and still disguised takes the women to dinner, and ends up sleeping with his former wife.
Some years later, he cheats Charbonnier at baccarat, without recognising the old soldier who helped him. After that, he manages to lose all his former gains in a matter of months. He eventually becomes a security officer.
Baccarat Was the Game Played In the Movie
The game played in Confessions of a Cheat was baccarat. Baccarat is one of the oldest and most popular games in casinos all over the world. The game seems serious and elegant, but is really simple to learn and play. There are three different forms of baccarat. Punto banco is strictly a game of chance, but in chemin de fer and baccarat banque the player can make choices, and this allows some skill, and also the possibility to cheat.
The main attraction in Confessions of a Cheat, is the charming impish scoundrel. His memoirs are relayed in flashback, rather than dialogue, and the cutting between past and present were way ahead of their time.
In 2008, Confessions of a Cheat was included in a list of 100 most important films.
